Multiple inmates killed during rioting in Tajikistan prison
AKIPRESS.COM – Three prison guards and 29 convicts were killed during the riot that occurred on May 19 in the high-security prison of Vahdat town, 15 km southeast of Dushanbe, said Deputy Justice Minister and head of Central Directorate of Corrections of Tajikistan Mansurdjon Umarov.
8 inmates were killed by their fellow inmates, he said. Among killed – three well-known religious leaders, affiliated with opposition Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan.
The current prison belongs to the Central Correction Directorate of the Justice Ministry. 1,500 convicts serve their terms there.
