Italy said it will stop accompanying the international flotilla trying to deliver aid to Gaza, despite concerns by activists that the fleet will be attacked within the coming hours. Italy and Spain deployed navy vessels to assist the boats after they were hit by drones armed with stun grenades last week.

Italy said it will stop following the international flotilla trying to deliver aid to Gaza once it gets within 278 kilometres of the shore, despite fears by activists that the fleet will be attacked in the coming hours.

The Global Sumud Flotilla has previously been attacked by drones armed with stun grenades and irritants in international waters off Greece.

The fleet – which aims to break Israel’s blockade of the Palestinian enclave – consists of more than 40 civilian boats carrying parliamentarians, lawyers and activists, including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg.

Activists said they were bracing for another strike in the coming hours. “Israel will probably attack us tonight, because all the signals point to this happening,” Maria Elena Delia, an Italian spokeswoman for the flotilla, said in a video on Instagram on Tuesday.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni later reiterated her call for flotilla members to immediately stop their mission, warning that a confrontation with Israel could derail diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza.

“Many would be happy to disrupt” a peace plan pushed by US President Donald Trump, Meloni said in a statement. “I fear that the flotilla’s attempt to breach the Israeli naval blockade could provide a pretext for this.”

Fleet to receive two warnings

According to the Italian defence ministry, once the convoy reaches the 150 nautical miles limit, the Italian frigate accompanying it will stop, “as communicated several times in recent days”.

The ship will issue two warnings to activists, with the second and final one foreseen at around midnight GMT, when the flotilla is expected to get within the stated distance, the statement added.

Delia said that activists had been informed about the government’s plans to have the navy ship stop and turn back to avoid “a diplomatic incident” with Israel.

She added that the flotilla had no intention of heeding Italy’s warnings not to get closer to the shore. Italy and Spain deployed navy vessels last week to assist the flotilla.

Israel did not respond to flotilla accusations that it was behind last week’s attacks, but it has vowed to use any means to prevent the boats from reaching Gaza, arguing that its blockade is legal as part of its war against Hamas militants.

Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has said he expects flotilla boats to be intercepted in the open sea and activists to face arrest.

On Tuesday, Crosetto made a “last appeal” to flotilla members to accept a compromise proposal to drop aid in Cyprus and avoid a confrontation with Israeli forces.

Flotilla representatives have repeatedly refused the offer.

Spain’s PM says he will send warship to protect Gaza aid flotilla

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Wednesday he will join Italy in sending a military warship to protect an international flotilla seeking to deliver aid to Gaza after it was attacked by drones off Greece.
Sanchez told a press conference in New York where he has been attending the UN General Assembly that the citizens of 45 countries were on board to deliver food to the population of Gaza and express solidarity with their suffering.
“The government of Spain insists that international law be respected and that the right of our citizens should be respected to sail through the Mediterranean in safe conditions,” he said.
“Tomorrow we will dispatch a naval vessel from Cartagena with all necessary resources in case it was necessary to assist the flotilla and carry out a rescue operation.”
The Global Sumud Flotilla is using about 50 civilian boats to try to break Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza, with many lawyers and activists on board, including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg.
The vessels were attacked by 12 drones in international waters 30 nautical miles (56 km) off the Greek island of Gavdos, said Marikaiti Stasinou, a spokesperson for March to Gaza Greece, which is part of the flotilla.
Thunberg told Reuters on Monday that they had drones flying over them each night.
“This mission is about Gaza, it isn’t about us. And no risks that we could take could even come close to the risks the Palestinians are facing every day,” Thunberg said in a video call from the ship.
Israel has repeatedly criticised the flotilla for its implied support for Hamas, but made no comment on whether it was responsible for the drones.
It launched the war in Gaza in response to attacks on October 7, 2023, by Hamas militants which killed some 1,200 people and saw 251 taken hostage, according to Israeli tallies.
Since then, the conflict has killed more than 65,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities, and has spread famine, destroyed most buildings and displaced the population, in many cases multiple times.

Italian unions ‘will block everything’ in response to Israeli flotilla interception

Dock workers in Italy prepare to stop work and block Israel-linked boats from entering ports

Two major Italian unions have declared a nationwide strike following illegal Israeli interceptions of the Global Sumud Flotilla, as protests erupted across the country on Wednesday night.

One of Italy’s largest unions, Confederazione Generale Italiana del Lavoro (CGIL), along with the grassroots Unione Sindicale di Base (USB), had previously pledged to halt work and “block everything” in the event of an attack on the flotilla.

Late on Wednesday, the Israeli navy began illegally intercepting flotilla vessels as they neared Gaza, detaining activists and taking them to the Israeli port of Ashdod.

According to Italy’s foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, 40 Italian nationals have been detained, including two Italian members of parliament and two Italian members of the European parliament.

“Obviously we will do everything we can to ensure these people can return to Italy as soon as possible,” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told reporters at a European Union meeting in Denmark.

But she added: “I continue to believe that all this brings no benefit to the Palestinian people.”

In a statement on X, USB announced “now is the time to block everything”, calling for mobilisations in “all squares” on Friday.

“The aggression against civilian ships carrying Italian citizens is an extremely serious matter,” CGIL said in a statement.

“It is not only a crime against defenceless people, but it is also serious that the Italian government has abandoned Italian workers in open international waters, violating our constitutional principles.”

Francesco Staccioli, of USB’s confederal executive, told Middle East Eye that unlike a previous strike in solidarity with the flotilla on 22 September, Friday’s work stoppage would go ahead without respecting the minimum notice period of 10 days, which is required under Italian law.

“We didn’t respect the notice period as this is too urgent,” Staccioli said, adding that CGIL’s decision to follow suit is unprecedented.

Following Israel’s interception, protests flared across Italian cities. In Naples, protesters burst into the main railway station and blocked the tracks, wielding flares and Palestinian flags.

In the capital, Rome, around 100,000 people marched towards Termini train station, which police had cordoned off. In Bologna, footage showed students clashing with police outside the university.

The flotilla was the trigger

Friday’s work stoppage follows a previous general strike in support of the flotilla on 22 September, in response to a series of Israeli drone strikes targeting the boats.

Some half a million people took to the streets across 75 cities. Schools were closed and roads and ports blockaded under the slogan “Blocchiamo tutto” (“We will block everything”).

But the spark was lit earlier in Genoa, one of Europe’s busiest ports, where dockworkers vowed to block all Israeli shipments in the event of an attack on the flotilla.

At the end of July, Genoa’s Autonomous Port Workers’ Collective (CALP), along with other trade unions and local community groups, amassed 300 tonnes of aid. On 30 August, a crowd of some 40,000 people joined a procession carrying the aid to vessels bound for Gaza.

In a speech that went viral on social media, CALP member Riccardo Rudino addressed crowds  in front of the port gates, pledging to “shut down all of Europe” if contact with the boats was lost.
