Malaysia Airlines: A man threatening to ‘blow up’ a plane is the latest in a long line of incidents

A MAN threatening to “blow up” a Malaysia Airlines flight en-route to Kuala Lumpur from Melbourne is just the latest in a string of episodes to strike the beleaguered airline in recent years.

Here are some of the more headline-grabbing incidents to hit the airline.

 

DECEMBER 4, 1977 — MALAYSIA AIRLINES FLIGHT 653

Malaysian Airline System Flight 653 was hijacked in December, 1977, ultimately crashing in Tanjung Kupang, Johor, Malaysia, killing all 100 people on board.

DECEMBER 18, 1983 — MALAYSIA AIRLINES FLIGHT 684

Flight 684 crashed two kilometres short of the runway at Subang Airport, Malaysia, with no fatalities among the 247 passengers and crew.

SEPTEMBER 15, 1995 — MALAYSIA AIRLINES FLIGHT 2133

The plane touched down too far along the runway at Tawau Airport, Sabah, in Malaysia, crashing into a shantytown. Of the 49 passengers and four crew on board, 32 passengers and two crew were killed. The cause was reportedly put down to poor handling of the aircraft by the pilot.

MARCH 8, 2014 — MALAYSIA AIRLINES FLIGHT 370

Six Australians were among the 227 passengers and 12 crew killed when a Boeing 777-200ER went missing on a flight from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Beijing Capital International Airport on March 8th, 2014.

The plane has never been found, although satellite data suggests that the plane was lost in the Southern Indian Ocean and that all 239 people on board perished.

The Malaysian government confirmed on August 5th, 2015, a flaperon from a 777 found washed up on Réunion Island belonged to Flight 370.

A piece of aircraft wreckage (an outboard flap) found on Pemba Island off the Tanzanian coast in June 2016 has been confirmed by the Malaysian Transport Ministry as belonging to MH370.

JULY 17, 2014 — MALAYSIA AIRLINES FLIGHT 17

Thirty eight Australians were among the 283 passengers and 12 crew killed on July 17, 2014, when a Boeing 777-200ER en-route to Kuala Lumpur International Airport from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport was shot down over the Ukraine by a missile.

APRIL 8, 2017 — MALAYSIA FLIGHT 2718

On April 8, 2017, Malaysia Airlines Flight 2718 overran the runway on landing at Sibu Airport in Malaysia. The nose gear collapsed. All 67 people on board survived.

JUNE 1, 2017 — MALAYSIA AIRLINES FLIGHT 128

A Kuala Lumpur-bound flight from Melbourne’s Tullamarine airport was forced to turn around after a passenger became “disruptive.”

The man reportedly tried to enter the cockpit threatening to “blow the plane up.” He was later subdued by at least 11 passengers. There were no reported injuries.
