The Afghanistan Power Supply Company (Breshna) says that the contract for importing electricity from Tajikistan for the year 2024 has been signed.

Hekmatullah Maiwand, spokesperson for the Breshna Company, wrote on his social media platform X on Wednesday, that the electricity purchase agreement between Breshna Power Supply Company and Tajikistan for the year 2024 has been signed.

Mohammad Hanif Hamza, the Chief Executive of the company, during a meeting with Mohammad Omar Asazada, the head of the Tajikistan joint-stock electricity company in Turkey, has signed the electricity purchase contract for the year 2024.

Breshna Company added that during this meeting, both sides also discussed and negotiated the extension of a new 500-kilovolt line from Tajikistan to Afghanistan.

The newsletter stated that the leadership of Breshna Company has expressed a desire for cooperation from Tajikistan with Afghanistan towards the resumption, coordination, and implementation of the CASA-1000 project.

This comes at a time when Afghanistan is heavily reliant on imported electricity from Central Asian countries and Iran. The country faces serious electricity shortages during the summer and winter seasons.

Electricity is currently rationed in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, and several other cities due to shortages.
