After armed clashes, citizens of Tajikistan suspend building works on border with Kyrgyzstan
Citizens of Tajikistan suspended construction works on a disputed area at the border with Kyrgyzstan, the State Border Service of Kyrgyzstan said.
The situation on the spot where a deadly shootout occurred is stable, the statement said. All checkpoints on border with Tajikistan function in normal mode.
“Citizens of third nations can cross checkpoints without any restrictions. Units of the State Border Service work in reinforced regime,” the statement said. Negotiations between Kyrgyz and Tajik border guards are continuing.
Both sides blamed each other for starting the September 16 shooting in Kyrgyzstan’s Leilek district and the Bobojon Ghafurov district of Tajikistan.
1 Kyrgyz soldier was killed, dozens of others injured. Another Kyrgyz soldier fell into coma.
Tajik side said 3 soldiers were killed and 5 others were injured.
The Tajik and Kyrgyz border agencies said the shooting followed a dispute over construction at a non-demarcated section of the border.
