Standing in a nearby park while her apartment block was burning, a 70-year-old woman told Reuters she was very worried about her neighbours.
“When I arrived, the block next to mine was already on fire and then I saw the remaining blocks catch fire one by one,” said the woman, who gave only her surname, Wong.
“I am worried about an elderly woman living on the same floor. I saw her grandson who’s still looking for her,” she said.
Wong said she has lived in the complex since the 1980s.
“I am a first-generation owner. I hope my flat isn’t burnt to ashes. There’s nothing I can do but watch the remaining blocks burn,” she said.
“Some people have been renovating their flats alongside the housing complex construction project. That has all been in vain. Many people are crying after seeing their homes burn down and are still looking for their families.”
“I retired a month ago and was planning to go travelling. Now I don’t know what to do,” Wong added.

A massive fire is ripping through multiple high-rise residential blocks in Hong Kong’s northern Tai Po district, killing at least 14 people and injuring scores of others as authorities struggle to bring the blaze under control.
Firefighters battled the orange flames into the night as thick black smoke billowed from the 32-storey towers, which were sheathed in bamboo scaffolding – whose use the government began phasing out in March for safety reasons – and green construction mesh.
The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.
Fire authorities said they were grappling to get to the towers’ upper floors due to the intense heat, and containing the blaze was getting tougher after night fell.
The Wang Fuk Court housing complex, where the fire started, has 2,000 residential apartments comprising eight blocks.
The Fire Services Department said it did not yet have a figure for the number of people who might still be inside the buildings.

Hong Kong’s worst fire since 1996
18:24 +05
The blaze at Wang Fuk Court is Hong Kong’s worst fire since 41 people died in a blaze in the commercial Garley Building on Nathan Road in the heart of Kowloon in November 1996. In that fire, 81 people were injured.
The fire was later found to be caused by welding during internal renovations.
A judge-led public inquiry led to sweeping updates of building standards and fire safety regulations in Hong Kong’s high-rise offices, shops and homes.
