PM Anwar: World leaders must restore political sanity
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for greater sanity in global politics.
“My main concern about international politics, which I do not wish to dwell on now, is the need to restore sanity among political leaders. May Allah grant us that light, perhaps not so much in this region, but in some other regions,” he said.
Anwar was speaking prior to this year’s breaking of fast hosted by the Foreign Ministry here today.
He said Malaysia’s international performance up to the end of last year had been commendable, particularly in its role as Asean Chair and in strengthening ties with close neighbours such as Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, and Indonesia, as well as other Asean member states.
“We then expanded our engagement across Asia, Europe, and boldly into Latin America, including Peru previously and Brazil, as well as southern Africa, including Ethiopia and Kenya,” he said.
He said the outreach led by the foreign minister and Wisma Putra was not merely ceremonial.
“It signifies friendship, fraternity, and cooperation between nations, and importantly provides space and opportunity to elevate Malaysia’s standing as a trading nation and a country that maintains friendly relations with all,” he said.
The prime minister also highlighted that economic and digital transformation alone were insufficient to ensure national survival.
“The survival of any country, particularly a multiracial and multireligious country like Malaysia, depends on our ability and capacity to embrace one another as one great family.”
Referring to the breaking of fast gathering, he said the presence of non-Muslim guests symbolised Malaysia’s spirit of accommodation.
“We regard this as part of our tradition of embracing, accommodating and respecting one another.
“This is therefore an occasion to rejoice… the spirit of unity cuts across all communities,” he said, adding that Malaysians must make every possible effort to preserve the country’s culture of tolerance and mutual respect.
Also present were Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, Media Prima Bhd group chairman Datuk Seri Dr Syed Hussain Aljunid, as well as ambassadors and high commissioners.
