Afghanistan to regain its seat in Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Sergei Shoigu

KABUL: Leading a delegation secretary of the Russian Security Council Sergei Shoigu, in a meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister for Political Affairs Mawlavi Abdul Kabir, said that the Islamic Emirate will regain its observer seat in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

According to a statement from the deputy spokesman of the Islamic Emirate Mullah Hamdullah Fitrat, the meeting which was also attended by the cabinet members, the Chief of Staff of the country’s armed forces and the Russian delegation, Sergei expressed Russia’s readiness to implement infrastructure projects in railways, transportation, agriculture, industry, electricity, and mining sectors.

“Afghanistan’s political and security developments have sparked interest among Russian investors for potential investments in the country,” the statement quoted him as saying.

Alexey Overchuk, the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, also mentioned that Russia intends to reduce or exempt high customs tariffs on exports to Afghanistan to enhance trade relations.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Prime Minister for Political Affairs Mawlavi Abdul Kabir, said that the Islamic Emirate views its stability and security as linked to regional stability and security, asserting that it will not allow Afghanistan to be used as a threat against other countries.

He noted that, with this objective in mind, the Islamic Emirate seeks active and meaningful participation in regional formats. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is a prominent regional organization comprising permanent members, including Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, Iran, and Pakistan.
