Serbia has officially inducted an FK-3 air defense missile system procured from China, making it the first European nation to deploy the weapon.

The milestone follows extensive training and performance evaluations, demonstrating Belgrade’s preparedness to operate the system.

According to local media reports citing the Serbian Ministry of Defense, soldiers from the 250th Air Defence Missile Brigade conducted daily training with the FK-3 to protect key facilities from various airborne threats.

“By arming the Air Force and Air Defense with the new FK-3 air defense missile system, the airspace control and protection system has been significantly improved in the Republic of Serbia,” the ministry noted.

The FK-3 is a crucial component in Serbia’s efforts to modernize its military in response to rising regional threats.

New Level of Protection

The FK-3 is the export version of China’s modern HQ-22 integrated air defense system, often compared to the US Patriot and Russia’s S-300 missile system.

It features a command center vehicle, rocket launchers, radars, and logistics support vehicles, providing a comprehensive air defense solution.

Capable of launching up to 12 missiles, the system can engage six targets simultaneously at ranges over 100 kilometers (62 miles).

It is also reportedly effective against aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles traveling at speeds of up to 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) per second.

“It is characterized by exceptional maneuverability and spatial efficiency, making it dominant among new generation missile systems,” said Captain 1st Class Stefan Manić, commander of the FK-3 missile battery with the Serbian military.

Serbia received its FK-3 systems in 2022, with the delivery believed to be China’s largest-ever to Europe, though exact quantities remain undisclosed.
