President Atambayev promises comprehensive law enforcement reforms upon constitutional referendum

Bishkek (AKIpress) – Constitution2010 “We will be able to carry out comprehensive law enforcement reform after introduction of changes into the Constitution since January 1,” President Almazbek Atambayev said at the inauguration ceremony of the sport complex today in Osh.

The amendments will bar law enforcers from impeding to work of businesses and officials, the President stated.

“You know that now businessmen and workers of government agencies in the regionso f the country are exposed to numerous checks by law enforcement agencies. Since January 1, all government agencies will be checked by the Accounts Chamber. Businesses will be checked only by tax authorities. In case businesses refuse to pay taxes, financial police will handle the matter then,” the President explained.

All rest agencies, according to the President, will deal with their designated issues: the Interior Ministry will work on security, crime world and drug trafficking; prosecutorial authorities and Anti-Corruption Service will watch after government officials, judges and MPs so that they do not steal public funds. There will be order in the country finally, the President promised.

The President also talked about upcoming constitutional referendum. “Last year, I opposed the initiative of certain MPs to change the current Constitution, since they did not propose significant changes, only some minor amendments. Today we propose changes that will protect independence of the country and will allow us to carry out reforms in numerous areas,” the President said.

The constitutional referendum will be held on December 11, on the same day with local council elections.
