Dr M mocks PAS, says party ‘confused’ with opposition status
SHAH ALAM, Dec 10 — PAS is confused on whether it is still an opposition party, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.
The former prime minister pointed out the contradiction in PAS’s stand on cooperation with Pakatan Harapan parties, saying that while it could work with DAP and PKR in Selangor the Islamist party could not do so on a federal level.
“PAS is a little bit confused. At this moment, they are in the government of Selangor where there is DAP. At the same time, they don’t want to be with us,” he said when attending the Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah)convention today.
The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman added that PAS-currently seen as being friendly with Umno would need to stop being confused before working together with the opposition.
“These are very confused people. We have to wait till they are ‘unconfused’,” Dr Mahathir said in jest.
He also said that any party that wants a three-cornered fight in the next general election was indirectly supporting the Barisan Nasional ruling government.
“I would like to say anyone who takes effort to make sure the next general elections becomes a three-cornered fight. Anyone who does this, supports BN,” Dr Mahathir stressed.
PKR Vice President Nurul Izzah Anwar said that PAS should study their alliances properly and not make hasty statements against the opposition for the future of the country.
“Our efforts are to save the future of Malaysia. I would like to remind them to please re-prioritise. This is our future.
“We have to make use, galvanise and unite in the interest of our future. That is my message to them. Hope they are open but our commitment is clear,” she said.
Last year, PAS severed ties with DAP which led to the dissolution of Pakatan Rakyat and the formation of Pakatan Harapan with splinter party, Amanah.
The Opposition parties including PPBM are mooting to contest under a single logo for the next general elections in order to prevent three corner fights.
