KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s King and Queen, Their Majesties Sultan Ibrahim and Raja Zarith Sofiah, have advised the public to take precautions and wear face masks amid unhealthy air quality caused by the haze.

In a statement shared on the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s official Facebook account, Their Majesties said unhealthy air quality could affect public health and cause various problems, particularly those involving the respiratory system.

They urged the public, especially senior citizens, children, those with respiratory problems and individuals working outdoors, to take preventive measures to protect themselves from the effects of air pollution.

Their Majesties also advised Malaysians to reduce outdoor activities, particularly when Air Pollutant Index (API) readings reach unhealthy levels.

The public was also advised to drink enough water, remain vigilant of official announcements and monitor daily API readings to safeguard their health and that of their families.

“Their Majesties hope that all Malaysians will continue to prioritise their health and take appropriate measures in dealing with the haze,” the statement said.

Smoke from fires in Kalimantan has been carried towards Sarawak by prevailing southwesterly winds, contributing to haze in parts of the state. Haze has also affected several areas in Peninsular Malaysia.

Under the API classification, readings from 0 to 50 indicate good air quality, 51 to 100 moderate, 101 to 200 unhealthy, 201 to 300 very unhealthy and above 300 hazardous.
