Aktobe terror attack verdict to be delivered on November 28

The specialized inter-district criminal court of Aktobe region will deliver verdict in one of the most high-profile terrorism trials in Kazakhstan – Aktobe attack of June 5 – on November 28, the press service of the court said.

The hearings are held in closed mode “for safety reasons,” court said.

Public prosecutor asks to sentence seven of the defendants to life in prison.

29 suspects appeared in the hearings on charges of committing a number of criminal offenses, including direct involvement in the terrorist attack.

18 of them are suspected of failure to report a criminal intention, and two – of harboring crime.

27 lawyers are there to represent the interests of the defendants.

48 persons are witnesses, 88 people – victims of the attack.

On June 5, a group of armed men attacked two gun shops and a military unit in Aktobe killing 3 civilians and 3 soldiers. The city declared a counter-terrorism operation regime. During the manhunt for the suspects, policemen killed 18 attackers, while some remained at large. The operation ended on June 12 as all the Islamists were caught.

The city government changed the “red” level of terrorist threat in Aktobe city to an elevated “yellow” one, which is in effect throughout Kazakhstan until January 15, 2017.
