Australian PM accorded official welcome in Putrajaya, Malaysia


PUTRAJAYA: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who is on a three-day official visit to Malaysia, was accorded an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex here today.
Albanese, who arrived at 9.56am, was received by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, followed by the playing of the national anthems of Malaysia and Australia.
He then inspected a guard of honour mounted by three officers and 103 personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (Ceremonial), led by Major Muhammad Firdaus Mat Hayin.
Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming.
Also in attendance were Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, foreign diplomats, as well as senior government officials.
After the ceremony, Albanese signed the guest book before proceeding to a four-eyed meeting with Anwar, followed by a bilateral meeting involving senior ministers and officials from both countries.
Both leaders are expected to discuss the conflict in and cooperation in ensuring energy and supply chain security.
The discussions are expected to focus on maintaining the steady flow of essential supplies, including fuel, amid evolving global economic and geopolitical challenges.
Following the meetings, both leaders are scheduled to witness the exchange of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering areas of mutual interest and to hold a joint press conference to announce the outcomes of the discussions and reaffirm their commitment to strengthening Malaysia-Australia relations.
Australia is a significant economic partner for Malaysia, ranking as Malaysia’s 12th largest trading partner in 2025, with total bilateral trade valued at RM78.63 billion (US$18.38 billion).
Malaysia and Australia elevated their relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) in 2021, providing a framework to further expand cooperation across three key pillars: economic prosperity, society and technology, and defence and regional security.
