Meeting on Afghanistan Held in Bishkek without ruling Taliban

According to some political analysts, the holding of the meeting ahead of the Doha meeting is significant for the situation of Afghanistan

EU Special Representative for Central Asia said that during the meeting, participants discussed how to jointly contribute to the long-term peace and stability in Afghanistan.

The meeting was attended by Tomas Niklasson, the Special Envoy of the European Union for Afghanistan, and Roza Otunbayeva, the head of UNAMA; however, no representative of the Islamic Emirate was present.

Terhi Hakala, the EU Special Representative for Central Asia, on X thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan for hosting a “regular EU Central Asia Special Representatives and Envoys on Afghanistan meeting ahead of Doha.”

The EUSR for Central Asia said on X: “Insightful discussion with our partners and UNAMA on how we can jointly contribute to the long-term peace and stability in Afghanistan.”

According to some political analysts, the holding of the meeting ahead of the Doha meeting is significant for the situation of Afghanistan.

“Both of the conferences on the assessment of the Afghan situation are a positive step for the Afghan people and shows the interest of the world, the Central Asian countries, and the European Union,” said Wais Naseri, a political analyst.

“I think the world wants to help Afghanistan, and it’s up to us [the Islamic Emirate and Afghans] to figure out how to take advantage of these good opportunities for Afghanistan,” said Wahid Faqiri, another political analyst.

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres will convene a meeting of various countries’ special representatives for Afghanistan in Doha, Qatar on February 18.

The focus of this meeting will be the appointment of a UN special representative for Afghanistan and a discussion on the country’s key issues.
