RM170mil cash, 16 kg gold bars sized in a graft probe linked to former PM Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yakub

KUALA LUMPUR: Graft busters today presented a number of items seized in connection with investigations into corruption and money laundering allegedly involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The items included cash amounting to approximately RM170 million in various international currencies, and 16kg of gold bars estimated to be worth almost RM7 million.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) displayed the seized items after revealing that hundreds of millions of ringgit in cash and valuables were confiscated from three locations, including a ‘safe house.’

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the seized cash included RM14 million in local currency as well as foreign currency such as baht, riyal, pound sterling (GBP), won, euro, Swiss Franc, and yuan.

“On this matter, our officers from the Forensic and Intelligence Divisions, respectively, will be involved,” he said, adding that this is to enable investigations to be completed as speedily and thoroughly as possible.

Yesterday it was reported that MACC seized approximately RM170 million in cash, held in various international currencies, along with 16kg of gold bullion worth about RM7 million, following investigations into alleged corruption and money laundering involving Ismail Sabri.

The commission confirmed that the operation involved raids at multiple locations, including residences and three other premises believed to be used as ‘safe houses’, following the arrest of four senior officers who served under Ismail Sabri during his tenure as prime minister.

The graftbusters also said it will summon at least 10 more witnesses as part of its ongoing investigation into the case.

The MACC also reaffirmed that the probe is being conducted independently, professionally, and according to existing laws, stressing its commitment to tackling corruption and money laundering in the interest of national integrity.
