Malaysia: Maybank signs deal to boost ASEAN currency capital markets

The MoU was signed during the inaugural joint forum organised by Maybank and CGIF, entitled “Accelerating Digital Infrastructure Investment Through the Bonds and Sukuk Markets 2026 — Securing Malaysia’s Digital Future”.
Maybank Group chief executive officer of global banking Datuk John Chong said the collaboration is built on a strong track record between the two organisations, which have previously worked together on bond and sukuk issuances in Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Hong Kong.
“With foreign direct investment into Asia continuing to accelerate, we see significant opportunities to develop innovative financing solutions, deepen local capital markets and enable businesses to access more diverse funding sources to support their growth,” he said.
Reflecting the positive outlook, Maybank has raised its forecast for Malaysia’s private debt securities issuance this year to between RM160 billion and RM170 billion, up from its earlier estimate of RM150 billion.
The bank said the revised projection is supported by a strong issuance pipeline, resilient macroeconomic fundamentals and favourable domestic funding conditions.
It added that credit conditions are expected to remain stable in the second half of the year, underpinned by healthy economic fundamentals and continued strength in domestic capital markets.
CGIF chief executive officer Noriko Nasu said deep and resilient local currency bond markets are essential for financing Asia’s long-term development priorities.
“Our partnership with Maybank brings together complementary capabilities to broaden access to capital, catalyse private sector investment and advance innovative financing solutions for the Asean+3 region,” Noriko said.
The forum, held in collaboration with the Finance Ministry and Securities Commission (SC), brought together about 150 policymakers, corporate leaders and industry participants.
It featured a keynote address by SC executive director of corporate finance and investments Datuk Zain Azhari Mazlan and a fireside chat with Bank Negara Malaysia Deputy Governor Datuk Marzunisham Omar.
Both parties will also work to mobilise financing for energy transition, digital economy development and digital infrastructure projects, as well as to support issuers in accessing diversified funding sources.
