AKIPRESS.COM – Kyrgyzstan’s next presidential election is legally scheduled for January 27, 2027 — the fourth Wednesday of January in the year when the incumbent president’s term expires.

The Parliament is expected to set the election date next week. Under the law, the date must be determined no later than four months before the vote. The election campaign timetable will then be tied to January 27.

If parliament adopts and officially publishes its decision on September 23–24, 2026, the nomination of presidential candidates would begin on September 24–25.

Key election deadlines

Based on the January 27 voting date, the main deadlines are:

• November 13, 2026 — end of candidate nomination;
• December 8 — deadline for submitting signature sheets;
• December 13 — deadline for submitting registration documents;
• December 23 — candidate registration must be completed; campaigning begins;
• January 17, 2027 — final day for a candidate to withdraw;
• January 26 — silence day;
• January 27 — election day.

The difference between a parliamentary decision on September 23 or 24 would mainly affect the starting date of the nomination period. The subsequent deadlines are tied to the election date.

If parliament fails to appoint the election within the required period, the election is considered automatically appointed on the day following the deadline. The Central Election Commission must then officially publish the date within two calendar days and begin preparations.

Who can run for president?

The Constitution and election law establish several basic requirements. A presidential candidate must:

• be a citizen of Kyrgyzstan and have no foreign citizenship;
• be at least 35 years old on election day;
• speak the state language;
• have lived in Kyrgyzstan for a total of at least 15 years.

The Constitution does not require a university degree. The law also states that the number of presidential candidates is not limited. Candidates may be nominated by a political party or through self-nomination.

30,000 signatures required

To register, a candidate must collect at least 30,000 voter signatures. No more than 60,000 signatures may be submitted to the Central Election Commission.

Signature sheets must be submitted no later than 50 calendar days before the election, after which the CEC verifies their validity.

Candidates must also pay an election deposit equal to 10,000 times the established calculation index. Under the current calculation index of 100 soms, this amounts to 1 million soms. The Constitution additionally requires candidates to submit a nationwide development program.

Who cannot run?

The legislation restricts participation by persons who are legally incapacitated or serving prison sentences under a final court judgment, as well as persons with a criminal record and in certain other cases specified by law.

The law also establishes restrictions related to criminal cases terminated on non-rehabilitating grounds, with specific exceptions.

What if the incumbent runs?

An incumbent president may seek another term if the constitutional limit has not been exhausted. The law specifically exempts the president from the general requirement for certain state political officials to suspend their duties after being nominated.

Therefore, registration as a presidential candidate does not by itself require the incumbent to leave office or transfer presidential powers. Under the Constitution, the president’s powers end when the newly elected president takes office.

At the same time, the incumbent is subject to the same election rules as other candidates, including restrictions on the use of administrative resources, campaign financing and campaigning.

The election law also restricts the distribution of materials that effectively constitute campaign advertising and identify a candidate through their name, symbols, slogans or other recognizable attributes during the period before candidate registration.

The CEC is responsible for verifying candidates’ compliance with the constitutional and statutory requirements and for registering candidates who meet them.
