PM Modi meets Canadian FM Anita Anand, says India committed to ‘forward-looking strategic partnership’
The meeting comes a day after PM Modi spoke to Canadian PM Mark Carney, with both sides pushing for an early conclusion of a trade pact and doubling bilateral trade by 2030

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday met Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in New Delhi and said that India was committed to building a “constructive and forward-looking strategic partnership” with Canada.
In a post on X, PM Modi said the two sides held discussions on strengthening bilateral ties across several sectors, including trade, technology, security, energy and education.
“Pleased to meet Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand. We had a productive discussion on further strengthening India-Canada ties in trade, technology, security, energy, education and people-to-people exchanges. India is committed to building a constructive and forward-looking strategic partnership with Canada that delivers tangible benefits to the people of both countries,” PM Modi said.
Anand, in her post on X, said Canada and India had “enormous potential to shape a more prosperous future, together”. She said her meeting with PM Modi focused on the strategic partnership and opportunities in trade, investment and security.
“Nearly 80 years of diplomatic ties have been enriched by generations of families, students and entrepreneurs who have brought our countries closer,” Anand said.
She added that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to India earlier this year and the ongoing Team Canada Trade Mission reflected a renewed ambition to turn shared priorities into lasting opportunities.

“We look forward to welcoming Prime Minister Modi to Canada this December,” she said.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Modi and Anand discussed ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest. These included trade, science and technology, defence, security, energy, education, people-to-people ties and multilateral cooperation.
PM Modi stressed the importance of sustaining the momentum in bilateral engagement and translating it into tangible outcomes, including through the early conclusion of negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest, the statement said.
PM Modi conveyed his warm greetings to Carney and said he looked forward to continuing their engagement.
The meeting came a day after PM Modi and PM Carney held a telephone conversation to discuss the future of India-Canada relations.
Following Tuesday’s call, PM Modi said the two countries were contributing towards a “more stable and prosperous world”. He added that both leaders had agreed to build on the positive momentum in bilateral ties and work towards concrete outcomes in trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people exchanges.
A statement from Carney’s office said the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to concluding CEPA negotiations at the earliest opportunity, supporting efforts to double bilateral trade by 2030.
“They welcomed the historic Team Canada Trade Mission currently taking place in India, led by the Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, as well as a visit to New Delhi this week by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand, to advance shared priorities, including trade, energy, and people-to-people ties,” the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office said.
