Latvia “fully funds” Kiev’s military needs with 5 mln. Euro allocation :( Germany – 500 mln. for PURL Ukraine armament programe

Latvia has approved a draft order to allocate 5 million euros ($5.8 million) to the NATO and US initiative supporting military aid for Kyiv, the Prioritized Ukraine Requirement List (PURL).
The PURL initiative aims to facilitate and expedite the acquisition and transfer of US defense equipment, funded by allies including European countries and Canada, to support the Ukrainian armed forces.
“Latvia’s financing of the purchase of American weapons in support of Ukrainian weapons is a clear signal of NATO and allies’ determination to ensure Ukraine’s priority military needs and strengthen collective security in Europe,” stated Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže.
The Baltic nation’s contribution “is a political and practical demonstration of solidarity, which once again confirms that Latvia, together with its allies, is ready to defend the international order against Russian aggression,” Braže added.
Since the start of Moscow’s war on Kyiv, Riga has provided nearly 540 million euros ($631 million) in military assistance.
Moreover, the country announced that it is committed to supplying military support equivalent to at least 0.25 percent of its GDP this year and in 2026.
Prioritized Ukraine Requirement List
Launched in July, the PURL mechanism compiles a list of equipment based on Ukraine’s requests, validated by the Supreme Allied Commander Europe.
Packages are announced regularly, with NATO coordinating deliveries, including through the NATO Security Assistance and Training to Ukraine program.
In August, Germany announced plans to fund one of its first support packages under the PURL mechanism, totaling up to $585 million.
This was preceded by a joint $585 million pledge from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, intended for US air defense and artillery.
The Netherlands funded the first package, worth $577 million, including funds for US-made Patriot missile components.
Germany to fund support package for Ukraine via new NATO mechanism
Joint press statement by the Federal Ministry of Defence and the Federal Foreign Office
In order to continue meeting Ukraine’s most urgent needs in terms of military equipment to defend itself against Russian aggression, Germany, alongside other allies, is prepared to fund one of the first comprehensive support packages totalling up to 500 million US dollars within the framework of the PURL mechanism (Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List).
US President Donald Trump announced on 14 July that the United States will supply Ukraine with military equipment and ammunition in the form of several support packages. Under the PURL mechanism, NATO will coordinate implementation and, at the same time, ensure that the items included in the packages meet Ukraine’s most urgent needs. The European partners and Canada are to provide the funding.
The support packages will include military equipment that is either not manufactured by the European defence industry or that can be delivered at the intended scale more swiftly by the United States than by European partners or Canada. This includes, for example, critical air defence capabilities. These are urgently needed to counter Russia’s ongoing airstrikes, which are killing ever more civilians throughout Ukraine.
We are grateful to the United States for its readiness to continue supplying weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, and we welcome the recently announced contributions from Allies in this context.
By deciding to take part in the initiative, we are underscoring our commitment to substantially strengthen and reliably continue our support for Ukraine and to demonstrate Alliance solidarity. The German Government is closely coordinating the details with NATO and the NATO Allies.
Since the start of the Russian invasion on 24 February 2022, Germany has made available or earmarked for the coming years a total of around 40 billion euro in bilateral military support for Ukraine.
