Spokesperson for the Qatari foreign ministry Majed al-Ansari said the war on Iran had shown that Gulf states could no longer rely on strategic alliances with the US for their security.

Qatar's Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari says the Iran war shows Gulf states cannot rely solely on the United States for security, calling for greater regional self-sufficiency while maintaining international alliances.

Speaking at the Hili Forum in Abu Dhabi, Ansari said the international forces and the US alliance were important but “not enough” to ensure the security of the region.

“We need to realise in the Gulf that having international forces in the region, having a strategic alliance with the US is very important but is not enough. Self-sufficiency when it comes to security is the only way forward,” Ansari said.

Qatar and other Gulf states have condemned Iran’s strikes on energy and other infrastructure across the region, saying they violate international law and the UN Charter.

Alongside Pakistan, Qatar played a key role in brokering an April ceasefire and a June memorandum of understanding between Iran and the US, but both arrangements have since collapsed.
