KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 — The Federal Territories Pardons Board is expected to discuss former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s application for clemency when it meets this week, according to sources cited by Free Malaysia Today (FMT).

FMT reported that sources familiar with the matter said Najib’s application was expected to be among the issues raised at the board’s meeting, although it remained unclear whether the meeting would result in a decision or merely a discussion.

A separate source told the online news portal that Najib could potentially be allowed to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest, although it was unclear whether the option would be considered at the meeting.

The development comes as Pakatan Harapan (PH) reiterated that individuals convicted of corruption or abuse of power, particularly in high-profile cases, should serve their sentences in full.

In a statement issued after midnight by its secretariat council, PH said it supported the Madani government’s efforts to combat corruption, leakages and abuse of power.

It said those convicted of corruption or abuse of power must fully serve the sentences imposed by the courts, while ongoing judicial processes should be allowed to run their course without creating any perception of outside influence.

The coalition did not name Najib or any specific case in the statement.

FMT reported that the statement came amid reports that the Pardons Board was expected to meet on Sept 11 to consider several matters, including Najib’s pardon application relating to his convictions linked to the 1MDB scandal.

Najib, 72, was convicted of misappropriating RM42 million belonging to SRC International and sentenced to 12 years in prison, along with a RM210 million fine. He began serving his sentence at Kajang Prison on Aug 23, 2022.

The Pardons Board subsequently halved his prison term to six years and reduced the fine to RM50 million.

On Dec 22 last year, High Court judge Alice Loke dismissed Najib’s application to serve the remainder of his reduced sentence under house arrest. Najib later withdrew his appeal against the decision.

FMT also reported that it had sought comments from Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh, Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar and Najib’s lawyer Shafee Abdullah.
