Astana airport renamed after Nursultan Nazarbayev

Astana international airport has been reportedly renamed after the President and now it is “Nursultan Nazarbayev international airport,” Kazakh media report Wednesday citing government resolution.

The resolution comes into force since the day of its first official publication.

Besides airport, some other things in Kazakhstan like streets, university, and money bear the name of the strongman. There is a Nazarbayev University in Astana. On December 1, Kazakhstan got its new 10 000-tenge bill with the picture of Nursultan Nazarbayev, Taldykorgan and Almaty unveiled a monument to the President.

There is also a whole town named Nurkent in the Almaty region.

In November last year, a member of the Kazakh parliament suggested to rename the capital city into either Nursultan or Nazarbayev, however the president did not like the idea. He commented on it on November 24, 2016: “They are putting “Nur” and “Nurly” on whatever they come up with. And it all associates with my personality. I’ve been raising this issue many times. Perhaps, one might think that it’s me giving commands to name everything “Nurly.” Yesterday, the parliament suggested to rename the capital after me. I’ve never ordered anything like this.”
