Israel bombs South Pars gas field, in response Iran hits Ras Laffan Qatar’s Key Refinery
The Qatar Foreign Ministry condemned the attack, asserting the country’s commitment to self-defense under international law while emphasizing its desire to remain uninvolved in regional conflicts.
Qatar’s Ministry of Interior said on Wednesday that civil defense teams had responded to a fire at the country’s main gas facility following what it described as an “Iranian attack.” In a statement, QatarEnergy said there had been “extensive damage” after “missile attacks” on Ras Laffan Industrial City. The company added that all personnel had been accounted for and that no casualties had been reported.
Responding to the incident, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry issued a strongly worded statement accusing Iran of continuing to target it and neighboring countries despite Doha’s efforts to avoid involvement in the conflict. It said such actions reflected “an irresponsible approach that undermines regional security and threatens international peace.”
Iran has intensified its drone and missile attacks across the Middle East, targeting various facilities in Gulf states as retaliation for perceived aggressions by the US and Israel. This includes increased reliance on drones, which are cheaper and can be deployed in larger numbers, making them difficult for air defense systems to intercept. Analysts note this shift indicates a strategic pivot in Iran’s military operations amidst ongoing conflicts.
The ministry added that Qatar reserved its right to respond under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, citing the principle of self-defense under international law, and said it would take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and the safety of those within its borders.

The strike comes amid escalating tensions across the region, with Iran accused of carrying out a series of attacks on energy infrastructure. Explosions were also reported over Riyadh on Wednesday, according to the AFP news agency, as officials described an intensification of Iranian operations against Saudi Arabia.
Earlier in the day, Iranian authorities had warned they could target oil and gas facilities across the Gulf in retaliation for Israeli strikes on the South Pars gas field, the world’s largest, located off Iran’s southern coast in Bushehr Province.
In a statement carried by the semi-official Tasnim News Agency, officials said several sites in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar could be targeted. Those included the SAMREF refinery and the Jubail petrochemical complex in Saudi Arabia, the Al Hosn gas field in the United Arab Emirates, and facilities at Ras Laffan and Mesaieed in Qatar.
Iranian state media had earlier reported that natural gas facilities linked to South Pars had come under attack.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry described the strike on Ras Laffan as “a dangerous escalation” and a violation of the country’s sovereignty.
Earlier this month, Qatar suspended liquefied natural gas production after a separate attack on the Ras Laffan facility, as well as damage to a water tank at a power plant in Mesaieed.
